Blogging
There are a lot of different ideas on what blogging is and what it isn't. Of course as with any technology it is how you use it. In its basic form blogging is a space where people can easily create content. Blogging software is based on a server, but once it is set up basically people can create an account and then add their own content.
There are a lot of different services. Two basic services that are available are Blogger and Blogmeister.
Blogger is a free service from Google and can be controlled in some different ways. You can create a blog that allows a group of people to work on it. You can also have comments that are posted to your blog sent to your email, prior to you allowing them to be posted.
Blogmeister is another free service that was designed by David Warlick. This service allows a lot more control and is what teachers might be more interested in using since it can
Basic Blogging
As mentioned before there are a lot of different views of what blogging is. In the most general context blogging is a simple web page creation program. Most people that consider themselves bloggers would probably disagree with this idea. Blogging to a lot of people is a way to start a conversation about different subjects.
One noteworthy blog that brought blogging to the mainstream during the 2004 Presidential Election was Wonkette. During the election Dan Rather's reporting on President Bush's military service was also a subject that was blogged about. The realization that the letter CBS had obtained was a forgery was reported on the web prior to most other mainstream news outlets. This helped to bring the concept of blogging to the public. From there blogging has become something that a lot of people are doing, at least until the next thing comes to the forefront:)
